Introduced by angelic vocals, ‘Puffy Head’ delves into primordial shoegaze stylings and spacious guitar tones, managing to sound both dreamy and intense at the same time. Penned by US-based outfit Powers of the Monk, the single is as nuanced and elegant as one could imagine: featuring the band’s high-pitched vocals and a playful, lullaby-like arrangement, it reminds us of the likes of Cocteau Twins, among others.
An artistic journey taking the best part of twenty years, Powers of the Monk entered a long hiatus in 2009, only to come back with new music in 2022. The recent collaboration with Italian producer Dani Macchi (from Belladonna) gave the project newly-found creativity. ‘Puffy Head’ is the result of such a process – as you can see, it’s working, giving Powers of the Monk a new shiny sonic livery.
