It’s an honour to be able to witness the return of such a gifted and experienced songwriter. Originally from Cuba, Roberto Poveda has been active for decades, boasting quite an extensive catalogue in the books. Recently he was able to connect with musician and facilitator Layton Weedeman, starting the process of re-discovering his oldest material. ‘Otra Noche Más’, the project’s most recent effort, is now released under the moniker POVEDA, and features all the soothing and introspective force of the Cuban composer.
Originally released more than 35 years ago by Cuban state label EGREM, it then went missing, with no trace of the original recording. Lucky for us, and for the Cuban Latin scene, ‘Otra Noche Más’ sees the light of day again. Produced with modern flair, the song makes use of a more eclectic sound, managing to establish itself in the contemporary landscape. Nevertheless, there is a very nostalgic vibe to it, perhaps mirrored in the organic and Latin-flavoured arrangements.
Notably, POVEDA was recently involved in the soundtrack for Coco Fusco’s latest film, ‘The Eternal Night’, which is currently premiering at the Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present.
