Steadily on the fringe, Planet Opal are some of the most unique and quirky outfits we have ever come across. Championing a boundary-pushing, experimental formula built on techno-infused synth tones, wholesome post-disco drums and vocoder-laden vocals, the Italian duo has successfully found a personal, unique identity, one that we are truly fond of.
The project’s aesthetic is riddled with vintage elements, taking as many cues from robotic krautrock roots as they do from decadent, rich arpeggiators. It’s a balance that works well, a constant battle between warmth, rounded tones and more industrial, noisy textures. It’s a battle between light and darkness, a battle that doesn’t have a winner – everyone is just too busy dancing.
‘I’ve Heard Brian Eno in the McDonald’s Fridge’ is Planet Opal’s latest effort, a dynamic and vibrant piece marking the group’s return onto the international scene after a two-year hiatus. Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, sonic voyager Giorgio Assi explains: “I was working at McDonald’s, and every time I opened the tempering fridge in the kitchen, its motor produced a sound very similar to the drone in Brian Eno’s “Thursday Afternoon”.
Imaginative drummer Leonardo De Francheschi completes the talented lineup. The two are set to appear at Spring Attitude Festival 2025, in Rome, later this year. ‘I’ve Heard Brian Eno in the McDonald’s Fridge’ anticipates the pair’s long-awaited follow-up album, ‘Recreate Patterns, Release Energy’.
