Texas-based alternative rockers Picnic Lightning recently put out a new single called ‘Simulacra’, and it’s a hazy, fuzzy, and almost shoegazy little number that I simply cannot stop listening to. Describing their sound as “brooding desert punk”, there is certainly a dark and shadowy atmosphere inside the tune, and I think it’s what originally drew me in straight away. That eerie guitar, those pounding drums and bass, the far-away sounding vocals…all of it! There’s almost a spiritual element to ‘Simulacra’, and I can picture it being chanted out at a ritual or a ceremony of sorts.
With influences ranging from The Velvet Underground and The Beatles to Arcade Fire, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and Courtney Barnett, Picnic Lightning craft music that explores the boundless complexities of life. They’re not here to write simple love songs or be the cliché of alternative rockers. They mean serious business, and they’re not going anywhere.
‘Simulacra’ wonderfully showcases the band’s one-of-a-kind sound, as well as their ability to create a haunting and mysterious soundscape. It’s far from traditional and simplistic, which is exactly why we love it so much! We’re waiting with bated breath to hear what they get up to next!
