Our obsession with sonic experimentalism should be known to the keen reader – sharing a background in music, the people behind Mesmerized are always eager to get to know forward-thinking creative, pushing forward the boundaries of musical experience. Paul Jorgensen is part of such a category, a sapient and wise alchemist able to mangle sound sources together, looking for new harmonic recipes and noise generators.
‘Somewhere, Somehow, Sometime, and Why Now?’ is a long collection of electronic pieces composed between 1993 and 2023 by Jorgenson, both in USA and Australia. The references are far and wide, from Nordic jazz tones (think Nils Petter Molvaer) to breakbeat and trip-hop grooves, passing through more avant-garde and abstract explorations of industrial textures.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Paul explains: “This record explores sonic soundworlds that collide with tribal-driven beats”. Perhaps that’s the key to it: an album that feels global, multicultural and free-form, yet familiar and recognizable.
