A nuanced and multi-layered record, ‘A Fall from Grace’ must be experienced in religious silence and with full attention, letting the mind (and the body) come to terms with the EP’s cathartic and melancholic lyricism. Balanced between dramatic folk tones and nostalgic country energy, ‘A Fall from Grace’ makes guitars its focal point, exploring different sonic avenues and playing styles.
While rock’n’roll and Americana provide the main inspiration for it, it’s obvious that Paul Claxton – the talented human behind the record – can count on an eclectic songwriting flair, able to shift from distorted fuzziness to acoustic bliss in the space of a single song. Hailing from London, but originally from Liverpool, the English troubadour packs ‘A Fall from Grace’ with four relatable and sensible songs, putting his gritty yet delicate vocals on a silver pedestal.
No better way to enjoy the EP than by using headphones. We were able to appreciate all the wholesome emotional energy emanating from Claxton’s lyrics, often exuding a little anthemic character too. ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ is likely our favourite: stripped back and primordial, the track fully encapsulates Paul’s musical prowess, providing a raw, unfiltered example of his artistry.
