Often, simplicity is the best approach to artistic expression. Owen Young knows it well, packing his acoustic gems with bucolic, heartwarming energy, partly echoing the tender country landscape he lives in. Hailing from Southern Ontario, the talented troubadour could be considered a mature artist, yet, for us it’s a quality in his favour. The depth of experience and nostalgic memories he holds certainly supercharge his songwriting.
‘These Painted Flowers’ is the strongest evidence of that. A soothing, wholesome EP, the record is part of the ‘Muddy River’ album cycle, a journey that started in 2020 and took four instalments to complete. In it, the keen listener will find joy and purpose, lullabied by Young’s evocative, heavenly vocals and his dynamic guitar and piano arrangements. Tones are light and refined, allowing for escapism and gentle positivity.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘These Painted Flowers’, Young explains: “Like the other parts of ‘Muddy River’, the songs on ‘These Painted Flowers’ were born out of the pandemic shutdown and aftermath. In concluding the album, this EP picks up the themes of relationships, regret, reconciliation and forgiveness, including forgiveness of self.”
