The keen reader might remember British Filipino songwriting duo Ooberfuse. Composed of Hal St John and Cherrie Anderson, the project has often championed socially relevant causes, taking a wholesome and authentic stance in the face of a crumbling global reality. Today, the group unveils their latest effort ‘We Will Overcome’.
Marking this year’s International Right to Truth Day (March 24th), the record sees Ooberfuse teaming up with PREDA (People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance Foundation), a registered, licensed and accredited non-government organization in the Philippines. Their work is crucial, as they set out to “defend and promote human rights and dignity through direct action in rescuing, protecting, healing and empowering exploited, trafficked and abused children, giving legal assistance, and aftercare.”
Ooberfuse embraces their usual eclectic musical flair, building an uplifting, hope-filled anthem with distinct reggae influences and global reach. Enlisting the help of a children’s choir (aided by PREDA), ‘We Will Overcome’ then solidifies into an anthem celebrating resilience and positivity.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Cherrie Anderson explains: “Growing up in the Philippines, I know that the biggest roadblock to tackling the social ill of the abuse of children, so prevalent in so many cities and towns, is a prevailing culture of silence. Like an impenetrable curtain that blocks out the sun’s rays, this silence-culture forbids a child from protesting and speaking up against betrayals that lead to violations. Music is a powerful means to end the silence and to allow the light into this darkness.”
Ooberfuse and PREDA’s charitable activities are ever-more important this year, following the closure of USAID and the rising tension between the US and China, causing the activation of new military bases in the Philippines.
