It’s not easy to describe ‘Swimming’. It is such a unique and quirky piece, that it probably deserves space and attention (and we did take our time with it). You see, extremely eclectic and playful, the record also possesses a strong nostalgic and melancholic character, allowing for a listening experience that’s hypnotising and cathartic. Penned by Los Angeles-based talent Oh Bummer!, ‘Swimming’ guides us into a mysterious and slightly creepy depressive state of mind, describing the complex train of thoughts and incessant overthinking that comes with it.
Personal experience? Perhaps. What we know for sure, is that the song offers a striking, sharp and intense lyrical view on mental health, and we are confident it will resonate with many listeners out there. Sonically, ‘Swimming’ is supercharged by a mix of soothing guitar riffs, leftfield textures and indie elegance, all drenched in contemporary and luscious grainy goo.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Oh Bummer! explains: “It is a snapshot look at how it feels to be in the middle of a depressive episode and not see an end in sight. The deeper you sink, the farther away the light at the surface gets. It feels like a rock tied to your foot”.
