Who are Oddysseys? That’s a good question. A quick trip to their Spotify profile reveals a rather productive and long-lived duo, a project boasting some impressive streaming figures. Take for instance ‘With You’ – from 2018 – making its way towards the one million mark. What’s interesting is how their style seems to have evolved, or rather, refined. Exploring the whole post-punk realm, the Chicago-based duo has travelled through shoegaze and electronic territories, eventually landing on a punchier and saturated formula, which we can hear in Oddysseys’ latest effort, ‘Music Video’.
In it, the group takes no prisoner. It’s an all-out, fuzzy and fierce arms race. Leaving spacious guitar tones behind, the pair distort everything they possibly can, providing the listener with a charming yet disorienting slice of post-punk awesomeness. Only two minutes in length, ‘Music Video’ follows the modern trend of keeping things short but sweet. They sure do that. Eventually, just before the ending, one can catch a glimpse of shoegaze-like melodies, although still as fuzzy as they come.
If you needed a reason to listen to Oddysseys, this is it. Furthermore, they are a project that’s been growing without external help, showcasing the force and character of their artistry. A worthy listen!
