How could I forget Nównøis? As someone who’s deeply attracted to everything leftfield and experimental, I was happy to write about ‘Incomplete’ a few months ago, declaring it “an unknown musical universe, a place where cultural references are scrambled”. ‘Like a River’ is once again the perfect evidence of that: Nównøis’ latest effort, the track showcases the project’s trip-hop and dark electronica influences, blessing it all with intense, poignant lyricism.
A talented songstress and sound designer, Nównøis drenches ‘Like a River’ in ethereal, haunting textures and gloomy harmonies, starting from a sparse, minimal section and then growing into a nuanced, quirky electronic anthem. The London-based creative’s evocative vocals crown the whole piece, wrapping the listeners in obscure, cathartic energy.
Speaking about the personal challenges around the record, Nównøis explains: “You might know the feeling when something compels you to continue working; in my case, writing and sharing music, even as a new mother with limited time. I wrote this song during those confusing and stressful moments when you’re trying to give 200% and feel like you’re losing your sanity.”
