Since covering ‘Shilling’ – a piece we described as “extremely immersive and cathartic” – we have deeply admired Swiss songstress Noum. Constantly balanced over soothing folk territories, avant-garde matter, and traditional French chanson flavourings, the talented creative embarks on a peculiar artistic journey rooted in deep lyricism, unconventional instrumentation, and veiled, hidden spiritualism.
Such a bucolic and heavenly formula perfectly matches Noum’s evocative and eclectic vocals, always pushing through colourful melodies and a plethora of crepuscular harmonies. ‘Born’ is the perfect evidence of that: in it, the producer, singer and musician returns in legendary fashion with a delicate, soft piece bound to hypnotised event the most apathetic of listeners.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Born’, Noum explains how it all stemmed from a painful personal experience involving her dad and his worsening health condition: “On my train rides to see my dad in the ICU unit each day I was developing the lyrics. I read it to him several days before he passed away and I made up the last line on the spot which made him react sweetly in his sleep, and so I kept the end this way.”
