Notre-Dame Of Tokyo Shares Debut Album ‘Weightlessness’

‘Weightlessness’ hits you like a heavy, intense brick, but it does so with leftfield flair and charisma. The opener track ‘Never Going Back Again’ jumps straight into ferocious, fierce and fuzzy territories, instantly telling us this is not a band messing around. Notre-Dame Of Tokyo takes inspiration from modern digital culture and rock’n’roll history, pushing the genre boundaries forward with a pretty unique formula. You see, ‘Weightlessness’ is not extremely heavy when it comes to distorted tones, but its overall vibe makes it an obscure, mysterious and anthemic record.

Perhaps it is down to the overarching industrial energy exuding from every note in the record, grabbing the listeners by the neck and taking them into unfamiliar, disorienting territories. Relentless, complex guitar riffs find the perfect companion in psychedelic and detuned synth patches, while harmonically bold lead vocals guide the music towards evocative and spiritual territories, only to then explode into uncontrolled fury, once again.

Describing themselves as a “cyber-punk group” – a description which fits them perfectly – Notre-Dame of Tokyo call London their home, although they find their roots in France. ‘Weightlessness’ is the group’s debut album, a worthy record.
