Having recently released a stunningly nuanced album, ‘Self-soothing’, American singer and songwriter Nona Invie has reminded everyone about the potent, cathartic artistry they have to offer. Entering their artistic universe is like being hit by a blissful, transformative ray of light, a stream of aural matter capable of purifying even the darkest souls. Such is the ease with which Nona Invie is able to irradiate their healing energy that, frankly, it took us a while to write this piece, as we kept getting lost in the music.
You see, ‘Self-soothing’ is a highly detailed record. Eclectic, orchestral and boundary-pushing, the album oscillates between dream-pop, alt-folk and ambient, eventually standing up on its own with little regard for conventions or unwritten rules. Nona Invie breaks them all, bringing her gifted creativity to a long-awaited personal album. Known for their work behind the scenes with the likes of Angel Olsen, LOW and Dark Dark Dark, Invie confirms their hidden jewel status. Not so hidden for us anymore, thankfully.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Self-soothing’, they explain: “This is a very personal record. I felt very selfish making it. Self-indulgent. I am an introvert, but I need to share. This record touches on feelings of guilt and shame after a long-term relationship ended, on remembering friends who died too young, on toxic love in friendship and romance, on hopeful feelings of creating and living in a fantasy.”
