‘Lanterna Magica’ is one of those records with seemingly simple songs; yet, under the surface, a wealth of songwriting-driven escapism is quickly revealed. In the case of Night’s Bright Colors, we’d argue such quality is the whole premise behind the project. Featuring twelve vibrant, welcoming tracks, the album engages in approachable indie-pop matter, the perfect match for Jason Smith and Kevin Bogg’s imaginative artistry.
Described to us as delving into “themes both dark and bright of consciousness, the fleetingness of life, and observations of late-stage capitalism”, ‘Lanterna Magica’ is certainly intricate on a lyrical level. Curiously, such vivid imagery is quickly counterpointed by lighter arrangements and a buoyant delivery, almost embracing a power-pop ethos. Such a balance between dark and light makes for a melancholic record, one that slowly wraps the listeners in its cathartic, nostalgic aura.
