Not long ago, we were writing about ‘Carried Away’, stunning single by American producer Nicky Roland. Praising the record, we proudly declared: “Built on cerebral synths, quick sweeps and euphoric arpeggiators, ‘Carried Away’ echoes the best Jungle and DnB around”. Now, Roland seeks to replicate the same success, this time delving into more house and disco-flavoured territories. ‘I Can Do That’ is his latest effort, a charming and anthemic club-ready banger.
A collaborative release with singer Royden Vigilance, ‘I Can Do That’ shows its true character from the beginning, with French-inspired tight drum machines and a solid, groovy bassline. Vigilance’s vocals feel elegant yet evocative, channelling a certain retro house quality within them.
Eventually, the record builds in expressivity with veiled textures and light stabs, always retaining its focus on the steady beat, something that raises ‘I Can Do That’ as the perfect candidate for a dreamy, nuanced dance track. Not just drums, but also expressivity and feelings.
