Emerging from Nashville, Nick Noon is the latest addition to the talented pool of songwriters the Tennesse capital has to offer. Mind you, Noon is no ordinary artist: even though he’s had a relatively short run (at least with his current project), the four published singles reveal a whole world of creative inspiration and boundless artistry. Debuting last year with the double single ‘Don’t Let the Paper Get You Down / Dear Deliah’, he made it clear he was pursuing holistic, genreless artistry: in search of the perfect sonic backdrop for his lyrics, he would not be afraid to discover diverse music avenues.
And so he did. From the pop and acoustic singer-songwriter style of his debut record, Nick Noon jumps straight into gritty guitars and bubbly, punchy drums, in ‘Costumes’, out this week. Best described as a classy indie anthem, the track seems to be elevating the Nashville resident towards a fuller, more contemporary sonic framework, while retaining his signature lyrical prowess.
What’s to note though, is how good Noon’s vocals are. They share such a distinctive tone: deep at times, but flexible in their registry. He’s able to cut through the noise with a malleable, evocative timbre, delivering carefully curated lyrics with immense gravitas.
