Honestly, when ‘ANIMA’ started playing I expected it to go in a completely different direction; initially, it champions a playful, bright and evocative electro-pop outlook, pairing very well with Naomi Rush’s luscious and elegant tone. Well, all of that is going out the door quickly, as the record quietly morphs into an alt-rock, emo banger, combining poignancy with intensity, yet leaving the listeners surprised and rather mesmerised.
It is this very same dichotomy that informs the rest of the track, very much a fight between darkness and light, a balanced chiaroscuro which leaves us in awe, completely overwhelmed by Naomi Rush’s unique artistry and quirky eclecticism. Her vocals are absolutely stunning, gentle, and soft, yet capable of such charisma and energy…!
Hailing from Bristol, Rush cut her teeth singing for Choir Noir, an experience which motivated her to take the rein of her musical journey. We are glad she’s done that, because ‘ANIMA” is truly good. Wow. More of this, please.
