Presented to us as a blend between “Andy Stott and The Notwist”, Nacht 84 seems to have clear ideas about where he’s headed. And we couldn’t be more excited. The Berlin-based producer clearly knows his references, showcasing a deep knowledge of the music scene he’s about to establish himself into. Honestly, by mentioning German indietronica pioneers The Notwist he’s already gained 100 points. How many more can he strive for?
Well, a fair bit. ‘The Baggage’ is the project’s latest effort, a stunning and nuanced offering balanced between experimental tones and indie formulas, creating a piece that’s relatable and steady, while bold and quirky in its sound design choices. Of course, Nacht 84 had excellent help, with musician and vocalist Elif Dikeç lending her evocative and hypnotising vocals to the record. Hamburg newcomer Joelle completes what’s an already compelling picture, laying poignant spoken words to the song’s outro.
What more could you want? Perhaps a larger album? Fear not, Nach 84 got you covered. ‘The Baggage’ anticipates a longer record, set to be released later this year, ‘A New Phantom’. If what we just heard is anything to go by, we are in for a real treat – stay tuned.
