There’s something truly nostalgic and melancholic in ‘Something Beautiful’, a title that interestingly contrasts with the record’s overall outlook. Moving at a rather mellow pace, the single jumps into gloomy and hazy instrumental elements, resulting in a dramatic and poignant piece that would work well in a soundtrack (we’d see it well in Fox’s ‘Gotham’, for instance).
The sonic formula is both retro and futuristic, navigating among darkwave and post-rock while maintaining a strong melody-first approach. Fuzzy, screaming guitars and rolling drums are some of the track’s highlights. Myrrh Larsen is the talented group behind the record, a Portland-based project with a knack for raw, sad lyricism and mysterious tones.
‘Something Beautiful’ also anticipates an upcoming EP, expected for February 2025. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Myrrh Larsen explain: “After the sting and the sudden blast of loneliness in a breakup there’s this moment, sometimes, where you start to let yourself see things that were invisible before.”
