The latest explorers in the ‘guitar plus electronics’ game field, My Friend The Chimpanzee approach their material with strong eclecticism, navigating dreamy and shoegaze stylings with a certain punch and charisma. The end result is rather surprising, spanning various genres with darker incursions into retrowave and synthwave – but always sounding fresh and inspiring.
‘2Paradise’ is the Austrian duo’s latest effort, a three-track EP with different degree of lyrical nuance. From the poppy, uplifting and slightly 80s-inspired ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’, to the leftfield and more electronic title track ‘2Paradise’. ‘Twin Moons/Bearwolf, Pt.2’ brings the EP to a close in an emotional fashion, a poignant indie jewel with a high degree of elegance and storytelling emphasis.
Hailing from Vienna, My Friend The Chimpanzee boast Josef Umschaid and Lukas Wieser at the helm of the project, showcasing their talent through a cathartic, complete and curated sound. Speaking about the title track ‘2Paradise’, they explain: “It is inspired by the novel ‘To Paradise’ by Hanya Yanagihara, it deals with the dilemma of environmental destruction that a modern lifestyle inevitably causes”.
