Boston-based, Munk Duane splits his life between being an independent artist releasing contemplative music, and being an accomplished film and TV composer. Having licensed his music to Hulu, The Tony Awards, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Super Bowl Half-Time Show, and hundreds of other impressive productions, as well as becoming a contributor to Extreme Music (Sony Music) library, it’s hard to believe that Duane finds the time to be a recording artist too. Nevertheless, Duan’s impressive discography proves it!
This song is Duane’s second release of 2022, following his release in October, ‘Myths’. The new single ‘Just a Word’ is a retro, slightly broody and incredibly serene song. Duane’s vocal style and vocal production, combined with his songwriting style, provide a Phil Collins effect over the electronic and soulful track. Though the Instrumentation is mainly digital, it has an old-school feel that compliments the rather 80’s sounding lead.
The release stays dynamically mellow throughout most of the song, occasionally building up the energy tastefully with vocal harmonies, interchanging percussive beats, and an electric guitar that weaves between the elements without stealing the focus from the main sonic theme.
I enjoyed Duane’s single on a dark rainy day, as his song set the tone, creating a warm and comforting escape from the gloomy day. Duane’s music is intriguing and expressive, as he experiments with concepts and production choices that are somewhat unconventional.
