London-based outfit mUmbo was created in 2021 by Doug MacGowan and Emma Semple. Teaming up with Italian drummer Antonio Dalé, they released their first album, ‘I Fly With Swallows’, a record that was well-received by critics and listeners in the scene. Naturally, it was time for something new. Following up on the three singles they have already shared this year, mUmbo is looking to end the year with pride and joy. ‘Rollin’ Over’ does exactly that, putting the final seal on a project that’s been showcasing instrumental prowess and songwriting expertise.
Building upon their signature blend of alt-rock, blues, folk, country and dream-pop, the British group delivers music that’s hard to pinpoint in a specific direction. It is this eclecticism that makes them interesting: you’ll never know where they might end up, but you can expect you’ll like it. ‘Rollin’ Over’ follows the same script. The track takes the listener through a journey into vintage new wave and shoegaze, only to insert a blues guitar solo towards the end. It sort of reminds us of Cocteau Twins, among others.
Overall, a great effort from the London duo. Their music is upbeat and guitar-driven, with catchy hooks and retro vibes that are perfect for listening to in the car, on your headphones, or singing along in the kitchen.
