We truly enjoyed delving into ‘All We Love Will Be Carried Away…’. Faced with its opener track ‘What The Water Brings’, the keen listener might mistakenly apply to the album the ‘alt-rock’ label. Yet, as ‘Rise, Fall and Divine’, and especially ‘Duma Key’ come along, it’s obvious how Mr Denton on Doomsday is way more eclectic than that. Simply, they are not restricting themselves to a genre box.
Armed with drums, guitar and bass, the American group jumps from gritty distortions to groovy drum patterns, visiting funk, grunge and indie in the process. It’s a melting pot, a lively artistic formula that keeps the band and the listeners on their toes. Special mention must also be given to their ability to keep things fresh with such reduced instrumentation. Let’s be honest, there’s not much to innovate anymore in the power trio/quartet space, yet Mr Denton on Doomsday manage to do it regardless.
Other seminal influences include nu metal (P.O.D. anyone?) – yet it’s all distilled into the project’s personal formula. Writing about the world as we know it, including politics and personal introspection, the Lansing-based band is guided by lead singer Josie’s charming vocals. Fate (Guitar, vocals), Evin Myrick (Bass) and Benjamin (Drums) complete a talented lineup.
