As a lover of anything hazy and vaporous, I vividly remember writing about MothBreath in May 2024. At the time, the British duo had been busy compiling their debut album, a soothing collection of expansive atmospheres and luscious guitars. Described by many as a heavenly encounter between shoegaze and trip-hop, MothBreath’s artistic output was perhaps even more experimental, incorporating a great deal of influences from folk and pop too.
“New year, new me” – states a very popular expression. The Frome-based duo follow that advice, although they are not exactly innovating; rather, they have evolved. ‘Brand New’ sees them delving deep into their bucolic side, favouring spacious vocals and slow-paced beats, eventually settling on a formula that’s poignant and welcoming, certainly having the potential to appeal to a wider audience.
Lyrically, MothBreath seeks to reconnect with nature, in a move wrapped in cathartic energy and healing resolutions. Kirsty Dougall’s evocative, elegant vocals are a perfect match for such a meaningful piece, wonderfully countered by John Libert’s crepuscular, nuanced production. Speaking about the song, they explain: “It’s reflecting on the restorative connections with nature and the seasons.”
