We are certainly familiar with Moontwin. Reviewing one of their previous singles ‘Tsunamical’, we described the group as “a project that’s equally unique yet nostalgic and drenched in tradition”. We stand behind our words: the talented duo seems to be constantly oscillating between fierce electro-pop and spacious guitar tones, making for a sonic formula that’s hazy and luscious, but also punchy and electrifying.
‘Storm In a Shell’ is the pair’s latest effort, a slice of retro electronica and shoegaze goodness. The track presents itself divided into two parts: first, a filtered, lo-fi section with a prominent arpeggiated synth bass. It’s then followed by a stream of pure dream pop and shoegaze euphoria, wrapping Maple Bee’s evocative vocals in a myriad of textures and reverb. Zac Kuzmanoc takes care of the production, here very reminiscent of retro-wave and Eastern-European indie bands.
Speaking about the single, Moontwin explain: “An unconscious seeking of sanctuary, taking comfort in the mundane. But just below the surface, the questions remain. Like a storm in a shell.”
