We have always had a particular attraction towards spacious, limitless guitar tones; sonic goo drowned in reverb which suddenly becomes more than the sum of its parts – a blissful, ethereal listening experience which always provides great escapism and catharsis. Naturally, ‘baby jane’; caught our attention. With its shoegaze styling and post-rock charisma, the track develops into a leftfield hymn, wrapping us in long textures and vibrant vocal harmonies.
Penned by Portuguese songster Moon Cowboy, ‘baby jane’ signals his first release on the 1991 Recordings label, a seminal UK-based shoegaze outfit with a long history in the genre. The single anticipates an upcoming EP, ‘explosion of sound’, expected in May.
Calling Lisbon his home, Moon Cowboy manages to deeply impress us with a huge track which is steeped in tradition, yet looking at the future. Underneath the very layers of delays and reverbs, a distant-sounding drum groove drives a steady tempo, raising the bpm higher than shoegaze’s standards. Overall, a wonderful record.
