We have been following Monroe Moon for a while now. Emerging from Michigan, the mesmerising duo has been championing a very arty aesthetic, balanced between soulful electronica, folk lyricism and pop sensibilities. Formed by Bunny Monroe and Theo Malkin, the project has made quite the name for itself, thanks to the pair’s productivity and very peculiar artistic identity.
¡GET UP! Is their latest release. A slow-paced, nostalgic gem, the song features charming minimalism; primordial drum machines are joined by simple synthesisers and soulful guitars, leaving ample space for Bunny’s evocative, spacious vocals.
Intrigued by their project, we caught up with Monroe Moon to find out more about their artistry and future goals… interview below!
Hey guys, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would you describe yourself, in a few words?
Dark Alternative Experimental Electro Indie Pop Crunch
Your current work is the result of a long journey; What first drew you to making music?
Dedication to self-exploration and dedication to supporting that search in each other, as a married couple.
If you had the opportunity to pick any artists in the world for a collaboration, who would be your first choice? (and second choice, perhaps?)
Ian Brown, Little Dragon
You recently released an evocative gem, the poignant and ethereal ‘Get Up!’. What was the inspiration behind it?
This song came out of a stream of consciousness after a series of events in our lives and the lives of our loved ones. It was a form of processing pain and grief felt and held from multiple directions and the transmutation of those emotions once surrendered into love.
Your music carries a constant tension between electronic elements (like drum machines) and acoustic instruments. Is that something particularly interesting to you?
Yeah, we love a good drum machine! We find mixing and balancing it makes for interesting music and most importantly, it helps keeps our creative flow moving. Neither of us plays the drums!
Do you guys write always together? or find it easier to develop ideas alone, initially?
I tend to write alone. I have a bit of stage fright and that also goes for allowing others to see my creative process. However, we do write together too and that’s when Theo has something he wants us to work on and write out together or something he has heard from the other room that he thinks we should lean into.
Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?
Self-promotion and overcoming stage fright.
What are the next steps for your project? Anything exciting on the horizon?
We have a new song out on November 21st, 2022…… and then a new song every month for quite some time….
