It wasn’t long ago that we were waxing lyrical about a tune called ‘Caught Up‘ courtesy of Belgium-based artist Monrad. The dark and dramatic offering really stuck with me, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting to hear his latest EP ‘Not by design’. Well, folks, it’s finally here, and it’s a mesmerizing sonic journey that is not to be missed!
‘On Fire’ begins proceedings with a twangy, Western-inspired guitar riff, before seamlessly transitioning into a synthy and hypnotic indie-rock gem. “It’s a song about making choices in life,” says Monrad. “Not easy, and surrounded by doubt”.
‘Not Yet’ is a heartbreaking tale of a long-term relationship ending, wrapped up in a gooey and intriguingly eerie soundscape, while track three, ‘Caught Up’, is one you’ll remember me raving about already.
‘Whatever it Takes’ is another utterly captivating tune that seems to have been tailor-made to showcase the rich and gravelly vocals of Monrad, before we end off with ‘Rumble’ and ‘The Game’. The remaining two tracks are yours and yours alone to explore as you wish. All I’ll say is that ‘Not by design’ has exceeded expectations! It’s genius!
