Mohawk Castle Shares Poignant Piece ‘I Killed The Velvet Underground’

Mohawk Castle’s artistic universe has always been pretty peculiar, to say the least. Exploring the fine line between alt-pop and avant-garde, the Californian creative guides a nuanced effort that pens dreamy, ethereal gems with a distinct bedroom/indie quality, yet with incredibly evocative vocals and forward-thinking lyricism. The keen reader will gladly recall reading about the project on our pages last year; today, Mohawk Castle inaugurates the new year with a potent, crepuscular new single, ‘I Killed The Velvet Underground’.

In it, the talented creative lets himself be inspired by – you guessed it – The Velvet Underground. Drenched in poignancy and melancholia, the track moves slowly, placing particular attention on its carefully drafted lyrics and the intense emotions evoked in Mohaw Castle. The production is perfectly on par with such a cathartic mood, featuring long atmospheres and a spacious, trap-inspired beat. Vocals are delivered with a prominent sense of looseness, letting the lyrics speak for themselves.

Focusing on the inspiration behind the song, Mohawk Castle explains: “This song was written around the time I found out my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I wrote it in response to the news and wanted to showcase our relationship, specifically the lunches we would have together when we worked near each other in New York, before I moved to California over 10 years ago”.
