Yet again, I find myself indebted to fellow my colleague and fellow writer, Gabriel Mazza. At the beginning of last year, he turned me on to a tune called ‘Hateful’ by a rising star from Los Angeles called Mimi Pretend. I fell in love with the hazy track and have been keeping a close eye on Mimi ever since. Today, I’d like to introduce you to ‘Colorado 1996’, the singer/songwriter’s sophomore EP. Showcasing her incomparable storytelling abilities and introspective sonic landscape, it’s six songs that you’re going to want to take in and fully experience.
The title track gets the EP underway in cinematic and ambient fashion. Synthy, fragile, and enticing, it’s the perfect start to proceedings. ‘First Time’, which was released as a single, then follows and maintains that same dreamy and ethereal atmosphere established by its predecessor.
‘Nobody Lives In Wyoming’ brings to mind the likes of Mazzy Star, an artist that Mimi is often mentioned alongside. Not bad company to keep if you ask me! ‘Smith Lake’, ‘Rocky Flats’, and ‘Teddy’ make up the remainder of ‘Colorado 1996’ and, without giving too much, are utterly irresistible and gorgeous tunes. Do yourself a favour and give this EP a listen. You’ll thank me later!
