A simple yet catchy and meaningful offering, ‘Elle était l’océan’ is the kind of track that would easily receive attention and widespread success in the summertime, perhaps sung at beach parties and poolside events. Built with a mainstream reggae identity, the track is incredibly groovy and uplifting, with a solid bass promising to prop it up on any large-scale audio system.
There’s a precise intention behind such a plain and minimal arrangement, an intention that French composer and lyricist Mikhaelize is very adamant about: “It is a question of placing the lyricist, as well as his message, at the center and in harmony with the instrumental”. It makes a lot of sense, while also revealing the artistic maturity he’s been developing over the years.
Reminiscent of the likes of Bob Marley, ‘Elle était l’océan’ is a true feel-good anthem, one that explores dub-style grooves while serving relatable and popular storytelling. Described as a ‘poem’ originally written for one of Michaelize’s ‘muses’, the song is certainly luscious and sensual – as it should be to catch the listener’s attention.
