Mike Reinstein Returns with Meaningful Album ‘The Birds Don’t Sing Around Here’

Mike Reinstein reminds us of how songwriting has changed in modern times. You see, we are flooded with playful, catchy hooks everywhere we look, yet nothing seems truly meaningful. In pop music especially, there’s a trend of sacrificing authentic storytelling for attention-grabbing slogans. Reinstein does exactly the opposite, indulging in honest, relevant songwriting that’s deep and meaningful, closely related to our modern society.

‘The Birds Don’t Sing Around Here’ is Mike’s latest effort, showcasing exactly what we were mentioning above; a long, complex album, yet relatable and friendly. Dissecting the current state of the world, in all its rough edges and troubled outlook, Reinstein gifts listeners wise words and a certain amount of accountability, a rare sight these days. It all unrolls over a 13-track album, with the English troubadour layering his warm, nuanced vocals on a power-pop extravaganza, with a pinch of folk energy.

Notable is the addition of ‘Mother’s Song’, a piece originally written in 1989 as homage to the Argentinian ‘Desaparecidos’. While the theme is tragic and painful, the recording itself is very nostalgic and vibrant. Only natural, when considering Reinstein’s long career in music. An expert songwriter and musician, Mike boasts past militancy in a band called Doris.
