A fierce and gritty offering, ‘Stonewall’ is a slice of energy and charisma in sonic form, wrapping the listeners in proud euphoria and anthemic vibes. Starting as a blend of alt-rock and punk stylings, the track slowly shifts into more cinematic, majestic territories, especially in the catchy chorus, which expands to include a plethora of textures and layered vocals. It’s this eclectic balance that greatly characterizes the record, making it a wonderful discovery for every keen rock fan.
Penned By Kiwi duo Midwave Breaks, the track is a staggering example of the vibrant musical underground enjoyed by Aotearoa these days – and it’s not a surprise if the pair arrived to our ears. ‘Stonewall’ is a worthy discovery, further enhanced by the group’s malleable and unwavering vocals, bright and evocative, perfectly matching their sonic counterpart.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, they explain: “So Bruce hit his pop-up pool with the lawnmower, putting a hole in it, and had to take it down. He’d been putting it off for a while, and as he was heading out to dismantle it, was thinking to himself “I don’t wanna do it but I gotta do it”, and very quickly that became a phrase he was singing in his head, which formed the basis and the opening line of the track!”
