Midnight Psychic Unveil Gloomy and Intense Album

We did warn you about Midnight Psychic‘s new album. In fact, these were our exact words: “Darkwave lovers unite! Midnight Psychic are likely to be your new favourite band.” If ‘Mixtape’ gave us a glimpse of what the project stands for – haunting and intense darkwave elements with a certain ‘soviet’ flavouring – ‘Heartache in the 12th House’ completes the sonic picture by adding 10 more tracks, in what’s a triumph of sharp, melancholic guitar tones and gloomy vocals.

References are more eclectic; take, for instance, the opener ‘Still Life’. A gothic, new wave and post-punk-infused effort, the piece echoes remnants of The Cure, among others. A sign that Midnight Psychic don’t just look at Molchat Doma, instead expanding their vision to wider nostalgia and melancholia. ‘Aubree’s Dance’ turns towards experimental tropes, unveiling a conceptual instrumental composition that still fits the album’s overall vibe.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, George Moore and Jayson Munto explain: “It is a sonic exploration into the tenebrous realms of loss, death, longing, and alienation. The album’s title references an astrological concept that lands close to the psychic regions of unresolved emotional pain.”
