Darkwave lovers unite! Midnight Psychic are likely to be your new favourite band. Hailing from Connecticut, Jayson Munro and George Moore have been busy writing music since early 2022. Constantly treading the fine line between gothic-esque new wave (think of The Cure) and more contemporary, darkwave/soviet-flavoured episodes (think Molchat Doma), the group has now unveiled their latest effort, a haunting, gloomy gem that we suspect will find a vast audience online.
‘Mixtape’ is exactly that: channelling the freshest leftfield formula, Midnight Psychic layers hazy, spacious guitar tones with quirky 80s’flavoured drum machines, the perfect settings for Munro’s obscure, hypnotising vocals. Curiously, ‘Mixtape’ is shipped with an alternative version, the original one: the references are kind of the same, but it’s decisively oriented towards new wave and synth-pop. This showcases Midnight Psychic wonderful evolution, as they refine and adapt their sound to the most contemporary sources.
One thing we are also fans of, in the final version of ‘Mixtape’, is the seemingly lo-fi, grainy livery, adding tons of charisma and mysterious energy to the track. Speaking about the lyricism in it, the band explains: “It is a song about a tortured remembrance of things past”. Look out for Midnight Psychic’s upcoming album, ‘Heartache in the 12th House’.
