mia van de loo Shares Personal and Dreamy EP ‘open book’

We recently discovered mia van de loo thanks to her single ‘fairtytale’; describing her as “an angel, a vibrant and fragile entity sent to earth to alleviate the darkness of everyday life”, we took a particular liking to the project. Intensively dreamy and spacious, van de loo’s artistic output is the perfect idyllic refuge for our tumultuous times – something to deeply cherish.

Now, the American songstress returns with a stunning EP, a beefier showcase of what she’s capable of. We are in awe: ‘open book’ puts everything we learnt in ‘fairytale’ under a magnifying glass, widening the sonic picture with lyrical vulnerability and sonic enchantment. ‘match’ is a melancholic, mysterious gem, a stark contrast with its follow-up ‘doll’, built on ukulele glory and uplifting melodies.

‘goodbye Friend’ bathes in brilliant tones and poignant lyricism, once again making clever use of minimalism and songwriting intensity. ‘Lullaby’ brings the EP to a close in an anthemic fashion, somehow putting all the previous tracks together into a majestic triumph of textures and vocal sweetness.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, mia explains: “A collection of songs I wrote as I started to discover my place in the world. It’s full of disappointment and hope; loneliness and friendship; frustration and reconciliation.”
