We came across Mia Lydia just a couple of weeks ago, and we were instantly mesmerized by her haunting, dynamic and kaleidoscopic character. In particular, her artistry stands out in her debut single ‘Won’t Happen Again’, a stunning slice of luscious and eclectic pop with rather meaningful lyricism. Exploring a painful and abusive experience, Mia Lydia seeks to express her inner thoughts with charisma and authority, something she’s clearly successful at.
Sonically, the track balances over RnB flavourings and intimate electro-pop. There’s a stark contrast between more leftfield, dark sections and sudden short bursts of poignant, cinematic matter. Eventually, the chorus explodes in fierceness, with soulful, wonky beats and Lydia’s evocative, powerful vocals.
Emerging from Brisbane, Australia, Mia Lydia explains how ‘Won’t Happen Again’ was written from the perspective of a third party: Putting yourself in the shoes of someone who is capable of abuse was interesting, but also pretty morbid.” Expected to release more music over the course of the year, the Aussie talent is certainly one to look out for, and we sure will do that.
