Having built up to this moment for the past few months, British voyager Messy Eater is now ready to reveal the bigger picture. An impressive, joyful body of work, ‘Starters’ EP is out now, celebrating its author as a gifted sonic alchemist, a bold and eclectic creative threading the fine line between nostalgia and futurism. Collecting Messy Eater’s recent singles, the EP also brings us a brand new offering, ‘Shake it, Drop It.
We are particularly impressed by it. While the York-based musician has experimented plenty with soul-funk, vintage electronica and psychedelic tones, he’s never truly entered any dance-infused realm. Well, that’s now addressed, with ‘Shake It, Drop It’ packing hints of house staples and club-oriented goodness; for instance, thanks to the recurring 90s-flavoured stabs, and the Chemical Romance-esque vocal samples. Fiercely pursuing pure, unfiltered artistry, Messy Eater creates an irresistible fictional universe, one littered with kaleidoscopic disillusionment and timeless euphoria.
Guided by its human counterpart Pete Bott, Messy Eater is not merely a music outfit, with each release also featuring a stunning animation by the artist himself. A gifted producer and composer, there’s no doubt that Bott has struck sonic gold once again. Is Britain ready for such a playfully leftfield record? Perhaps. For now, we are just glad we found it first.
