Mermaid Avenue Returns with Genre-Agnostic Album ‘Loveday No.9’

Known for their genre-defying sound and unwillingness to be placed in a box, please give a big welcome to Australia’s very own Mermaid Avenue! Having been around since 2018, the band have a decent amount of material already to their name, but today I’d like to hone in on their brand new album ‘Loveday No.9’. Featuring ten tracks, the record is a multi-faceted experience with original tunes and also a few remixes of songs from the act’s second album ‘Sugartown’.

Getting things underway is ‘Embers of Fires Gone’, a bookending masterpiece that beautifully captures Mermaid Avenue in all of their glory. A little country, a little rock ‘n’ roll, a little Americana…Just perfect! ‘Darkest Hour’ then follows and takes a softer, more gentle approach. A delicate piano, an acoustic guitar, and a lap steel are the order of the day here.

‘Someone Like You’ then comes crashing in and we’re thrown back into the band’s rich and rocky soundscape before the album’s title track makes its appearance. All I’ll say is this…’Loveday No.9′ is quickly becoming one of my favourite records of the year. It deserves your full and undivided attention.
