There’s a lot to unpack in ‘Saturday’. A kaleidoscopic and leftfield EP, the record is championed by San Diego own’s musical genius Melted Computer, showcasing a great deals of eclecticism and inspiration. Borrowing greatly from smokey ad fringe genres such as vaporwave and future funk, the EP is a whirlwind of filtered samples, cinematic references and lo-fi sound design, all drenched in a distinctly vintage livery.
The opener episode ‘Cat Time’ is also the focus track. Featuring pitched-up vocal samples resembling a cat meowing, the piece is as ethereal and hazy as one would expect, incorporating synth-pop and leftfield solutions which are pretty original and quirky. ‘Every Saturday Ends’ is perhaps the most vaporwave offering in the EP, truly nostalgic and widely stereo (a strong chorus effect on it).
‘Tuning In’ is decisively groovy, but also delivered with no real low frequencies. It’s a feature common to the whole record, a choice that makes it even more avant-garde and vibrant. Perhaps not for everyone, ‘Saturday’ is well worth a listen (or two) – just be ready to dream and escape!
