When approaching ‘flame.’, it’s hard not to notice a definite early ‘2000 energy, channelling that very same fierce pop-rock character so common in figures such as Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson. At least vocally: Melanie Pierce sounds powerful and charismatic, driving emotional and introspective lyrics with relatable fragility. Sonically, the record endures in mellower soundscapes, built upon pianos and guitars, almost resembling a ballad.
It’s the contrast between vocals and arrangement that makes the track pop into our ears, standing out from the crowd thanks to its edge, melancholia and light nostalgia. Emerging from Detroit, Pierce seems to be aware of her potential, finishing the track with an intense and repetitive lyrical hook, firmly planted in the listener’s ears.
Asked about the inspiration behind the single, she explains: “It is about walking away from what is not meant for you, and the feelings of not being enough.” Anticipating a new EP expected later this year, ‘flame.’ is the latest chapter in Melanie’s journey to recognition, a journey that we are proud to be part of.
