There’s something inherently playful in Mel Quinn’s artistic output. Even when exploring more convoluted lyrical themes, she manages to give her material a witty, refreshing spin, making her a unique and authentic offering in the current music landscape. In an industry where many seem to encourage standardisation, Quinn is a step ahead, showcasing his talent for the breaking and innovative force it is.
Following up on last year’s ‘You Don’t See Me’, the British artist now returns with a brand new effort, ‘Wish You The Worst’. Compared to past records, we get a glimpse of Quinn’s singing voice, whereas we’d often be treated to a hybrid spoken-word lyricism. In any case, the track feels like a definite step up for the Stevenage resident, raising the stakes on both production value and songwriting sharpness. We love it, the contrast between the sunny and uplifting instrumental versus the tongue-in-cheek lyrics makes for an almost comedic result, confirming Mel Quinn’s abilities as a writer.
Lyrically, ‘Wish You The Worst’ recalls a past painful relationship. As Quinn explains: “Without getting too deep I was hurt pretty badly in a way that no person should be hurt. However I didn’t want to go serious with it, also I thought ‘wish you the worst’ could apply to everyone’s personal experience of someone who has hurt them, it could apply to an ex, a boss or anyone.”
