Meat in Space Evolves His Sound in ‘Ruby Tourmaline’

We are fairly familiar with Meat in Space’s cosmic lo-fi sound. To us, it’s like poetry: we love everything that’s psychedelic, retro and lo-fi, anything that allows us to escape our complex reality and find a slice of dreamy, euphoric joy. Often, it’s a fictional place, just for us. ‘Ruby Tourmaline’ is one of those spaces; a catchy and nuanced offering, the song signals the latest sonic exploration by the California talent, here showcasing a newly found livery.

Leaving behind the extremely noisy stylings the project was known for, ‘Ruby Tourmaline’ presents a tamer version of Meat in Space, described by himself as ‘mid-fi’. Recorded on analogue tape, the track sees a clean electric guitar dictating the overall vibe, with a fitting contour of tiny drums and various keys. Vocals are delivered quite casually and with a certain fashionable flair, preferring lyrical meaning over technical prowess.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Meat in Space explains: “A message of letting someone know you are thinking of them as they are going through a difficult situation. The lyrics follow variations on that idea, wishing for someone you care about to persist in the face of challenging circumstances.”
