Me & Melancholy has a pretty clear manifesto: delving into deep, dark and evocative territories, doing so with a healthy dose of synthesisers and retro-flavoured euphoria. Hailing from Stockholm, the project is the solitary artistic journey of producer and musician Peter Ehrling, pouring meaningful lyricism and gritty, hard-hitting arpeggiators into material that feels introspective, transformative and rather mysterious.
‘Under the cover of darkness’ is exactly that, a collection of some of Ehrling’s latest work. The album is quite sizeable, with fourteen pieces populating its long tracklist. In it, the keen listener will delve into synthwave, chillwave and some charming new wave references, all pinpointing towards the heavy use of drum machines and bass-related sonic generators (yeah, a synthesizer).
Not to mention, Me & Melancholy also makes ample use of his passionate, deep vocals, packed with gravitas and authority. Speaking about the record, he explains: “There are a few references to the night and the feeling that it is somewhat bad to be a person that is awake at night. But I have learned through the years that some people are just made for night and it’s nothing wrong with that.”
