‘Silent Waters Run Deep’ is undoubtedly one of the best debut songs I’ve heard all year – and that’s not a statement I make lightly. Deeply fragile, cinematic, and emotional, the tune comes courtesy of Leipzig-based singer/songwriter and soul-pop vocalist Maxie Melpomene. Guided by the most beautiful of piano performances and dramatic drum work, Maxie uses her soul-stirring vocals to tell a tale of trauma, independence, and emotional strength.
“We are the product of our parents and find it difficult to detach ourselves from them,” says the artist. “We are shaped by their trauma, their memories, and experiences. If I only know this path that has been lived, how can I find my own?”
Introducing oneself to the world with such a personal and sensitive piece of music is a bold and courageous move. It shows a vulnerability that too few artists are brave enough to put forth these days, and it’s something that simply has to be commended.
