The keen reader will remember reading about Matthew Hayes Jacobs only a few weeks ago. Featuring his debut single ‘What Wonders’, we praised it as “an honest and inspiring gem”. Something about the project that truly impressed us at the time was the nuance and depth behind Jacobs’ lyricism, in stark contrast with the direction taken by the industry as a whole.
Capable of penning reflective and meaningful pieces, Matthew now returns with a worthy follow-up, ‘What Secrets Lie Ahead’. It still flourishes on acoustic, intimate settings, but the production values appear higher and more eclectic, with a gentle acoustic guitar joined by a myriad of textures and a charming tabla. Overall, we find that the song and composition have more space and room to slowly develop and grow in intensity.
Quite unique and quirky from a sonic standpoint, ‘What Secrets Lie Ahead’ also flourishes on its rich and mysterious lyricism, looking at the future with curiosity and open-mindedness. As Jacobs explains: “The song is a meditation on the mysterious nature of life, particularly the secrets that are ahead in the future.”
