Introduced by dark and broody electronic textures, ‘Atlas’ evolves rather slowly, thanks to a minimal hip-hop beat and veiled electronic elements. Crowning it all, we find Matt McKnzi’s evocative and malleable vocals, moving with luscious energy and heightened charisma. Growing in intensity, the record becomes catchy and melodic, although conserving its minimal character. It’s only during the last chorus that ‘Atlas’ introduces a more wholesome and loud selection of synthetisers, before taking itself to a close.
Penned by Dallas creative Matt McKnzi, ‘Atlas’ represents his personal journey into RnB and hip-hop, blending traditional emotional lyricism with modern icyness and sound design. Frankly, it’s a very measured offering, with a production that never overpowers McKnzi’s elegant yet deep vocals, allowing him to completely dominate the piece.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Matt explains: “The listener is invited to a world of drifting emotions, where the music rolls and rises like the tide and the references to greek mythology create an eerie nostalgia.” ‘Atlas’ anticipates a larger upcoming record, ‘Ghosts’.
