We last wrote about MatAre in July 2024, celebrating what was seemingly a new era for the American rocker. Defining ‘Forever Light’ as “raising the stakes, sounding better than ever”, we were adamant about the project’s future. Now, the Atlanta-based creative returns with an uplifting, nostalgic gem, ‘Under A Stone’. Built on lush indie guitar tones and groovy, uptempo drums, the track leaves ample space for MatAre’s dynamic, evocative vocals, wrapping the vocals into a rewarding listening experience that reeks of melancholic new wave energy, yet maintaining its contemporary flair.
Known as Matt Rousseau by day, MatAre is still growing and refining his sound; judging by what we can hear in ‘Under A Stone’, he’s been listening to a whole lot of retro material (also obvious because of him citing The Cure as one of his main influences). We are not complaining, it’s right up our street. Such a decadent yet fast-paced livery perfectly matches the song’s deep lyrical message, shining a light on solitude and the way one can deal with it.
Speaking further about ‘Under A Stone’, MatAre explains: “I live and work in a separate city and home from my loved ones. Because of this, I always feel detached from a normal family. I wanted to write a song about how I have normalized this life and in a way have made it an optimistic endeavor, hence the upbeat and seemingly happy tone of the song.”
