This is going to be a busy year for MatAre. With the goal of releasing an album in the near future, the Atlanta-based creative graces the airwaves with a series of vibrant, vintage-flavoured singles. Following up on ‘Under A Stone’ – released back in January, the American musician now returns with ‘The Siren’, a track that keeps building on the project’s new wave, post-punk influences, but also a piece that expands on MatAre’s sensible songwriting flair.
Sonically, the new single is certainly darker and haunting, embracing a certain gothic rock character reminiscent of The Cure (as always). That said, there’s also a great deal of contemporary fashion, especially in some of the guitar patterns, revealing a mild indie energy. MatAre’s vocals are a perfect fit for such a vibrant environment, never overpowering the instrumental, instead delivering a tale of evocative storytelling, a “cautionary tale”, as the Atlanta-based creative describes it.
The songwriting is a crucial part of the release, as MatAre is usually looking inward when writing, describing a particular emotional state or experience. In ‘The Siren’, he’s now looking outward, using a captivating tale as a vehicle for an educational message. “A simple story about someone drawn to beauty and mystery and in the end it is their undoing”, as we are told.
